What if..

We prayed selflessly for those who need prayer, what if we cared for our friends with no thought of getting anything back in return, what if we genuinely pursued godly relationships instead of buying friends, what if we strived for pure lasting relationships instead of trying to hook up with as many people as possible, what if we abandoned what is expected and pursued the extraordinary, not because we are extraordinary but because HE is extraordinary and He calls us to a higher purpose. Romans 12:1-2

I am constantly confounded by the fact that He knows exactly what He’s getting into when He says He loves us

Good music is so hard to define, and even harder to find. Everyone has their own definition of what good music is and what is needed to create good music. I offer my humble opinion as both a musician and a common consumer of music: as a musician, i enjoy music that uses great technique and has just overall great musical work behind it, great dynamics, great tones, great rhythms, i love listening to bands with fantastic lead guitarists because hearing people who are so good is so enjoyable. Also music that goes a step outside of what is normal, abstract parts, abstract rhythms, anytime a song goes outside of a 4/4 beat and dares to be different, that is attractive. But also music needs a sense of simplicity, so much music today is “more is better, bigger is better, but that kills the authenticity and the creativity behind it, the best songs are ones where you can strip everything away but just a piano and vocal or acoustic guitar and vocal and it’ll still be a great song. Music is extremely intricate yet extremely simple. As a consumer, I think good music is music that speaks to you, everyone has songs that almost define them, songs that they come back to after and after again, songs you can never get tired of, songs that speak to your soul. But music is also fun, it can be loud and fast and enjoyable. Music is above all else, meant to express the deepest parts of our hearts, and good music is what does that.

In the name of fun…

Senior homecoming has come and gone…and left me with a little bit to write about…I couldn’t help but notice the common theme as i walked through the senior hallway, people talking, laughing, cheerfully reminiscing about their experiences while drunk saturday night. And i just wonder, how far are we willing to go in the name of fun, this little word that somehow carries so much weight people are willing to risk their lives for it. People laugh and joke about alcohol poisoning and how close they came to death, but it was fun, so that makes it ok, how dare you “judge” them, they just wanted to have fun, so what if they’ll have permanent liver damage, it was still fun…but where’s the point when our pursuit of fun goes too far ? , where’s the point when we should stop and realize we are literally trading our lives for a few hours of very temporary happiness (which we most likely won’t remember anyway) ? , there are some questions that people just don’t ask anymore because they’re not worth asking, like why do girls get such nicer bathrooms, or why do teachers give homework, but there are questions that need to be asked, lives literally depend on it.

What is seniority ?

It’s a strange and special feeling walking into the same hallways as a senior as you did 3 years ago on a terrifying freshman year. There’s a sense of confidence and pride knowing that you stand at the top of the hierarchy. But does being a senior really make you supposedly “better” ? , or is it just something we like to use to elevate ourselves, have we , in the pursuit of our seniority , simply belittled others ? , I remember one of the first lunches during my freshman year, not knowing anyone, sitting alone, and then being invited by a group of seniors to their table. Those seniors didn’t care about what grade i was in or who i was, those seniors exemplified true seniority , which isn’t mocking the underclassmen, true seniority is taking care of the underclassmen, it isn’t elevating yourself to the top of the social hierarchy then proclaiming how much better you are than everyone else, it’s using that position to better others. Seniority lasts for a year before all that pride comes crashing down in the form of freshman year at college, and I hope all seniors will use the last year of high school, living true seniority. By the way, early release is freaking awesome.

He is not your homie…

I walked into journey’s at the mall the other day and immediately a t-shirt with a cheesy cartoon representation of Jesus and the words “Jesus is my homie” caught my attention. In my mind that shirt represents so many self proclaimed “christians” mindsets about who Jesus is. He’s just a buddy, someone cool to talk to, yeah he’s the savior but really he’s just a close friend, he’ll accept me no matter what i do right ?…WRONG ! , Jesus is NOT my cute little buddy that I pray to while texting someone else , Jesus is NOT just another friend that I complain to for the sake of someone listening, Jesus is NOT my homie that i maintain a casual friendship with but I’m free to hang out with other people on other days too…Jesus is infinitely superior to any friend, He is fully God (Colossians 1:15-17), and fully powerful (Luke 21:27) , Jesus deserves all my attention, all my respect, all my efforts, all my life. He is the supreme creator of Heaven and Earth, He is the savior, He is the author of all that is good, and so he is NOT my homie, He demands more than a casual relationship, He demands full devotion of my time, my efforts, my possessions, and he has rightful entitlement to anything He desires. Oh how i hope we will see that He’s so much more than a homie…

And so He has given us a great commission, to pace a room at night saying ‘there is a place where He is not worshiped, there is a place where He is not worshiped i cannot sleep !’ , to set aside our temporal causes and give ourselves to this one great battle.
Paul Washer
